In October 1991, twenty five theatre enthusiasts joined together to form the Lokadharmi Theatre Group in Kochi, Kerala, India. Over the years, Lokadharmi has emerged as one of the important theatre centers in the country. The history of this growth from an intimate group of theatre enthusiasts to one of the important theatre centre of India is documented here. Lokadharmi dreams the emergence of a Village Theatre culture with immense energy rooted in Indian ethos and tradition, at the same time depicting contemporary Indian realities.


Artistic Director; Chandradasan: The founder and Artistic Director of Lokadharmi is one of the important personalities in Indian theatre, who is an actor, director and writer. He has directed more than 35 plays in a career of 25 years that ranges from classics to slapstick comedy and from Village folk to Children's theatre in Malayalam, English, Sanskrit, Kannada and Tamil. These plays were performed extensively all over India in important theatre festivals and also in Greece. He is also a research scholar with many papers to his credit which published in renowned journals. He had also acted in a number of important plays. Presently he is a Professor in Chemistry at St. Albert's College, Kochi


Children's Theatre; Mazhavillu: Lokadharmi is having a children's theatre group under it, named Mazhavillu(The Rainbow). In this group 40 children in the age group from 10 to 17 assemble in Changampuzha Parkwhich is a cultural square in the city of Kochi on all Saturdays under a tree named " the tree of theatre- theNataka Maram", and do improvisations, games, play readings and other theatre activities. The children's version of the play Charandas Chor (Charandas, the thief) based on the famous play by Habib Tanveer was produced in December 2002. It was accepted by the media and the spectators as a land mark in the children's theatre scenario of the country. Then on Mazhavillu is producing at least one play annually and has performed in many important theatre festivals all over India.

Chairman; Dr.K.G.Paulose: The chairman of the board of directors of Lokadharmi is Dr. Paulose is an authority on Indian Aesthetics Culture, Indian theatre, Koodiyattam, Natyasastra etc. He is the author of many books and also an academician of excellence. The former Registrar of The Sree Sankara Sanskrit University, and the former Principal of Government Sanskrit College Tripunithura; now Dr. Paulose is the vice-chancellor of Kerala Kalamandalam deemed university for art and culture, Cheruthuruthy.

Artists: Lokadharmi has a group of talented and trained artists in its repertory with rich performing experience. They include folk performers, dancers, artists, musicians, creative designers, and theatre trainers. The ensemble work of these talents create the ambience characteristic of the Lokadharmi productions



The acclaimed productions of the group include the contemporary adaptations of Karnnabharam (The Anguish of Karnna - a Sanskrit play by Bhasa), Chathankattu (Indian adaptation of The Tempest by William Shakespeare), Poranadi (The Outcast- a contemporary play in Malayalam by K.N.Panicker), Nandan Kadha (The Story of Nandan -a contemporary interpretation of a myth in Tamil by Indira Parthasarathy), Medea (the Indian adaptation of the Greek classic by Euripides), Macbeth by William Shakespeare, Paattabakki (The Balance Lease - a well applauded stage version of the first political play in Malayalam) written by K.Damodaran and Ubu Maharaja (Ubu Roi – a parody in/of theatre written by Alfred Jarry) - all directed by Chandradasan; Madhura Kandam (The Madhura Episode - written by HS Shivaprakash and directed by R.Raju produced in collaboration with NSD RRC, Andha Yugam (The Dark Age - based on the lyrical play in Hindi by Dharmaveer Bharathi directed by Sudheer Babu and Mathavilasa-Bhagavadajjukam a juxtaposition of two Sanskrit comedies written by Mahendra Vikrama Varman & Bodhayan directed by V.R.Selvaraj, Innalathe Mazha (an environmental theatre production based on the novel by N.Mohanan scripted & directed by Ullas Mavilai). Lokadharmi has also collaborated with Hole Ranga, an eco theatre group of Honnali- Karnataka and produced Madhuve Hennu (The Bride) in Kannada written by H. S. Shivaprakash. The collaboration with Sanskrit College, Tripunithura resulted in the production of Mathavilasa Prahasanam(The Pranks of a Drunkard- a comedy) in Sanskrit written by Mahendra Vikrama Varman, and with the campus theatre of St.Albert’s college Eranakulam in the Malayalam version of Madhavi written by Bisham Sahni.

Mazhavillu, the children's theatre wing of Lokadharmi performs the children's version of Charandas Chor(Charandas, the thief) written by Habib Tanvir. The Mazhavillu has also performed the play Panjara Saala (the prison/school) written by BV Karanth and Alibabayum Nalpathu Kallanmarum (Alibaba and Forty Thieves)written by Chandrasekhar Kambar, all directed by Chandradasan. Festivals: Lokadharmi has participated with its production in many International theatre festivals that include the circle of the south earth; an International festival on ancient Greek Drama 2001 held in Greece. Also has performed in many National Multi-lingual Theatre Festivals all over India including the Bharath Rang Mahotsav 2002, 2004, and 2006 organised by National School of Drama New Delhi. Lokadharmi participated in the prestigious Mahindra festival 2008 at New Delhi. Also Lokadharmi has organised festivals with groups from all over India and abroad performing, in Kochi, Kerala

Achievements: Many productions of Lokadharmi have won the National awards for Best production, performance, direction, acting etc., from many All India Multi-lingual Theatre Festivals. The most important among them is the Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Award (Meta) 2008 for the best play, best costume design and best stage design for our play Karnnabharam. Also our artists were awarded with fellowships and scholarships in theatre by the Cultural Department, Government of India.
